In 2013 I started doing free outdoor projection mapping performances on the Western Washington University campus in Bellingham, WA.
The open spaces, abundant architecture, and free electrical outlets made for a perfect opportunity to practice the art of projection mapping.
In this particular setup a good friend, Jordan H., helped setup a synthesizer, speaker system, and microphone, so that anything sang or performed on the keyboard would trigger visuals on the building.
Each key was tied to a section of the building as was the microphone intensity mapped to the distortion of a wireframe mesh of the building. All this was custom programmed in the classic Quartz Composer visual-programming language.
Posters were made, people attended, and many took the opportunity to try a little riff for themselves. Free, open, experimental, and a great time in that formative summer of 2013.
Since then I have taken the projections a bit further, though, still keeping that playful sense. Find out more about this venture, Lumenarius, on the full website, below.
